Venom: Let There Be Carnage Review

Abby Landers, Staff Writer

This movie is currently in theaters and is the sequel to the 2018 movie Venom. We are reintroduced to the main character Eddie Brock, played by Tom Hardy. Brock is a journalist infected with a symbiote (Alien) named Venom and in order to survive must find a human that carries the same genetic code. Eddie Brock and Venom are a match, however, in this sequel, there’s another match with a character named Cletus Kasady, played by Woody Harrelson.  Unfortunately, Kasady is a serial killer inhabited by the offspring of Venom and goes by the name Carnage.

In this sequel, we are introduced to Shriek, aka Frances Louise Barrison, played by Naomie Harris. Shriek is the love interest of Kasady. Although she doesn’t have a symbiote, she does have the ability to manipulate the sound of her voice by screeching, causing damage to a human’s ears. These sounds will incapacitate a symbiote because they are so sensitive to high-frequency sounds.  Throughout the movie Venom and Carnage engage in multiple fights, eventually leading up to a final battle at the end of the movie with only one survivor.

Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed this film because like most Marvel movies it continued the story in an interesting and exciting way. I can’t really pick between the two Venom movies. The first movie really did a great job setting up the sequel. It gave us the backstories and let us get to know the characters, enabling the audience to just hop right into the plot of Venom: Let there be Carnage. This movie really gave the action Marvel fans what they were expecting. This movie gave us intense action at every point, as well as comic relief.  What made Venom’s personality most memorable was his ability to make the audience laugh even in the most serious scenes.

Overall, I recommend this movie to a teenage audience. The PG-13 rating is accurate. However, it would be in the viewer’s best interest to have knowledge of the first movie in order to fully appreciate this sequel. I’m hoping there will be a third. And in true Marvel form, be sure to watch all of the end credits for a special preview for Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
